| |

Date of construction - May 2004
Steam vessel "Elbe" was built for German company Norddeutsche Lloyd. She signalized a forthcoming of a new type of a ship - "fast liner", specialized passenger vessel. More than, "Elbe" was one of the fastest steamships of that time.
German industry had not enough facilities for construction of such a big ship, so she was ordered from shipyard "John Elder & Co." in Glasgo, where she was launched in 1881. Vessel of gross tonnage 4510 BRT had a length of 128 m, breadth of 13 m and could carry 1117 passengers. Except for steam engine of power 5600 hp, "Elbe", like all steamers of that time, had auxiliary sail rigging with 4 masts, that, however, newer was used. Full speed of a vessel was 15 knots.
Already in 1882 "Elbe" set a record, made a trip from Southampton to New-York in 8 days and one hour. But, despite of so successful start of her carrier, the end was tragic. With name of "Elbe" one of the biggest accidents in international shipping is associated. 29 January 1895 at 05.17, when sailed with 195 passengers and 181 crew members, she was rammed by English freighter "Crathie". Getting a huge hole in the aft part, she sunk in 25 minutes. From 376 persons on board 332 ones went under. First salvage vessel come to the place of catastrophe only 6 hours later.
Huge amounts of victims was a shock for community. The result was a public discussion in a Reihstag, that land to developing of a new safety rules of German Lloyd. Some of that rules maintains up to now.
For model construction we used an original drawings and additional information.

Photos:
- Most of products of our model shop are models of motor yachts, so construction of model of historical ships adds nice diversity.
- Vast rigging makes construction of "Elbe" almost so laborious as construction of sailing ships.
- There are only compass and engine telegraph on a bridge. Note absence of search lights, that very soon became necessary attribute of any ship.
- View from port to fore-mast and a bridge.
- Forward portside lifeboat.
- According to wish of client, lifeboats are shown enclosed by tents.
- "Elbe" had an archaic system of shroud tension with dead eyes. Each shroud is tensioned by wire tensioner made of seven details.
- Surface of anchor imitates forged iron.
- We could not find a description of original aft decoration, so we have to reconstruct it from analogs.
- Many details we have made by casting from polyuretan resin, for example, five steam winches.
