Project 722UK Training vessel for young seamen

Project of modernization of former military school ship (project 722UK) for use as a school ship of young sailors was developed in year 1997 for Novgorod city Young sailors club. Task of modernization was to accommodate ship for sailing practice of young cadets and to fulfill modern requirements of Russian River Register. Reconstructed ship was launched in year 1998 and was named "Mikhail Balaban".
The main area of exploration of the ship are rivers Volhov, Neva, Svir, lakes Ilmen, Ladoga and Onego, and Finnish gulf. School ship sails there from May to October.
Decked steel ship with "cruising" buttocks shape and expanded two-storied superstructure is powered by two diesel engines working to fixed pitch propellers. Engine room is located amidship. Hull is divided to seven watertight compartments by six transverse bulkheads extended from bottom to main deck.

During modernization old superstructure was totally dismantled and replaced by new one. On the first floor of superstructure there are saloon, cadet's messroom, single-place cabin, sanitary block and galley. On the second floor there are spacious wheelhouse suitable for cadet's training, and captains cabin. Accommodations under weather deck were also rearranged. Tanks for sewage and bilge waters are installed in accordance with Sanitary Rules and Environmental Pollution prevention rules. Vessel also have got a new fresh water system, sewage system and fire-fighting system.
After the modernization vessel have receive class М-пр. "special ship" of Russian River Register.
